Zune's last days: Microsoft pulling Zune HD apps, select features on August 31st

Microsoft's oddly named music service put its official resignation in earlier this summer, but the Zune brand isn't in its coffin just yet -- although Redmond is certainly driving in the nails. Zune Pass subscribers, for instance, are now receiving word that the service's Mixview playback and channel playlist features will be discontinued on August 31st, along with music video streaming from the Zune desktop software. User licenses to previously purchased music videos are being reworked as well, cutting off user access to old content on new machines. The service's once heavily touted social aspect seems to be making way for Xbox Music as well: users will no longer be able to send or receive messages, invite friends or share songs, playlists, and play history. Last, but not least, the company is dealing its old hardware one final blow by discontinuing Zune HD apps -- not that there were many to kill off. Microsoft has little else to say in the brief email, but promises to share more information about Xbox Music soon. Check it out for yourself after the break.

Consumer spending posts biggest rise in five months

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Consumer spending got off to a fairly firm start in the third quarter, rising by the most in five months and offering hope economic growth would pick up this quarter.

Other data on Thursday showed the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits held steady last week, indicating a lack of improvement in the labor market and keeping additional monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve on the table.

The Commerce Department said consumer spending increased 0.4 percent in July after a flat reading in June. Last month's rise in consumption, which accounts for 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, was in line with economists' expectations.

When adjusted for inflation, consumer spending increased 0.4 percent, also the largest increase since February.

"The improvement in spending activity suggests that overall economic activity may be off to a fairly decent start in the third quarter," said Millan Mulraine, senior macro strategist at TD Securities in New York.

Reports from U.S. retailers suggested some of the spending momentum carried into August, with a range of retail outlets - from Costco Wholesale Corp to Limited Brands Inc - posting better-than-expected sales gains.

Separately, the Labor Department said first-time applications for state unemployment benefits were unchanged last week at 374,000. The four-week moving average for new claims, a better measure of labor market trends, rose 1,500 to 370,250.

Jobless claims have risen by 10,000 in August, suggesting some moderation in the pace of job growth after payrolls increased 163,000 in July following a gain of just 64,000 in June.

Even though data on consumer spending and housing suggest that economic activity picked up early in the third quarter, the state of the labor market could determine whether the Fed eases monetary policy further at its September 12-13 policy meeting.

Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank President James Lockhart told CNBC the central bank's decision at that meeting would be a "close call." A Reuters poll of fund managers found that only 44 percent think the Fed will announce a third round of bond purchases in September, down from 70 percent last month.

Investors will look to a speech by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke on Friday for clues on the central bank's next step.

"The economy does not seem to be faltering or going into reverse," said Chris Rupkey, an economist with Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi in New York. "But for a Fed that thinks the economy is not good enough, the economic data today is not consistent with 3 percent-plus growth or a falling unemployment rate."

The jobless rate, which ticked up to 8.3 percent in July, has been stuck above 8 percent for more than three years, the first time this has happened since the Great Depression.

In addition, business spending is weakening and inflation is slowing.

U.S. stocks opened lower, while U.S. Treasury debt prices extended earlier gains. The dollar maintained its losses versus the euro and yen.

INFLATION SUBDUED

Consumer spending dipped 0.1 percent in June when adjusted for inflation and last month's increase was an encouraging sign. In the second quarter, consumption had expanded at the slowest pace in a year, helping to hold back economic growth to a modest 1.7 percent annual rate.

Households were helped last month by subdued inflation.

A price index for personal spending was flat after edging up 0.1 percent in June. In the 12 months through July, the PCE price index rose 1.3 percent -- the smallest increase since October 2009 -- after increasing 1.5 percent in June.

A core measure that strips out food and energy costs also held steady last month for the first time since September, giving the Fed scope to launch another round of bond purchases to drive borrowing costs lower.

In the 12 months to July, the core PCE price index increased 1.6 percent, the smallest rise since October, from 1.8 percent. The Fed aims for inflation of 2 percent.

Household income increased 0.3 percent after rising by the same margin in June. Income available to households after stripping out inflation and taxes increased 0.3 percent after gaining 0.2 percent in June.

With spending a touch above income growth, the saving rate slipped to 4.2 percent in July from 4.3 percent the prior month.

Tweet This Do you know why it is important to only hire locksmiths that are licensed and professionally bonded? Most likely this sounds completely foreign to you, but it is information you should know. The most important reason is because many countries and states have such laws stating that locksmiths must be licensed. They actually must be licensed through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services.

The second reason is because when licenses are handed out to bonded locksmiths, the government and other agencies such as the FBI collect identification details. They collect such information as fingerprints. The reason for this is so that the government can see if the locksmith has a criminal background. If so, they will not issue a license to them to ensure the safety of customers. They want to make sure that the locksmith you are hiring is legitimate and that he uses his craft to ensure your safety, not to make things more accessible. (quality reviews)

The last reason you should only hire locksmiths that are licensed and professionally bonded is because there are unfortunately people out there that just want to take advantage of others. These people are often inexperienced and very unprofessional. They may call themselves locksmiths, but in actuality they are just looking for a quick way to make some cash. They will attempt to give you advice on different types of locks and keys, but they actually have no idea what they are talking about. They might also make extra copies of your keys or not properly install your new lock.

If you are looking for someone to give you qualified advice and recommendations on security needs in your home or office, you will want to ensure that the locksmith is licensed. Without a license they might not be able to install electronic security systems or locks properly. This could possibly cause wiring problems in your home and cause serious problems such as small fires or your electricity going out.

You should also find out if the locksmith you will be using has liability insurance. This insurance protects the client and locksmith against any accidental damage to the property or to life. A bonded locksmith is one that pays a fee, which is often quite nominal. Once the locksmith passes a background check, the bonding company is able to reimburse money in the case of an accident up to a previously agreed upon amount. Bonding is similar to insurance; it is just added protection for the client. Most big industries offer bonding for locksmiths in their respective areas.

Once you have found a Sacramento locksmith you like, you should ask them for the license number. With this number you can contact the business bureau in your area and see if the number is from a government issued license or not.

School District Tries To Scare Up $3 Million In Advertising To Pay For Sports

Forget spending a few bucks to put your company?s name in the back of some paper-thin football program. If you?re looking to sponsor a school?s sports program, think big ? like spending millions of dollars big!

For years, schools have gotten more aggressive and ambitious about selling off space to corporate sponsors to make up for money they can?t get ? or would rather not try to get ? from taxpayers, including offering naming rights to facilities. (At my son?s high school, famous alumnus Dwyane Wade and T-Mobile kicked in $150,000 in 2007 to renovate the basketball court?and rename it D-Wade Court, though I noticed at the parent fall sports meeting recently that the ad on the court for the T-Mobile Sidekick has been removed).

But forget a mere $150,000. Why not go for, say, $3 million? That?s what Clark-Pleasant Community School Corp. in Whiteland, Ind., wants to do to fund expansions and improvements to its outdoor sports facilities.

A change to Indiana?s constitution?in 2010 limited the ability of schools to raise taxes or sell bonds without public approval. So the school district, located in Indianapolis? south suburbs, is trying to appeal to individuals and companies to give a little. Recognition levels include ?listing the names of businesses or individuals who commit at least $500 on banners displayed at all sports events up to placing names of donors giving $1 million on the school?s football field and other?venues,? according to an Aug. 30 story from? The Associated Press (which got the story from one of my former employers, the Daily Journal of Franklin, Ind., where in my younger days my beat included the Clark-Pleasant schools).

Wow ? $1 million for naming rights to a high school field? I guess the price has gone up quite a bit since Noblesville High, north of Indianapolis, sold football field naming rights to a local Chevrolet dealer in 2006 for $125,000 over 10 years, or even the $500,000 Gloucester High in Massachusetts got from New Balance for naming rights as a means to help fund stadium renovations.

Then again, Clark-Pleasant may be encouraged by the success of its neighboring school district to the west, Center Grove Community School Corp. of Greenwood, Ind., which in 2011 got a five-year, $1.1 million commitment from a local auto dealer to cover pay-to-play fees, in exchange for the right to paste its name all over school athletic facilities. Even $3 million is doable, given that the Lubbock (Texas) Independent School District in May got that in one fell swoop from PlainsCapital Bank in exchange for naming rights to football, baseball and basketball facilities.

Clark-Pleasant is hardly the only school district with million-dollar ambitions. In Lewiston, Maine, the community and schools are offering naming rights as part of the incentive to raise $3.8 million to renovate athletic fields.

While selling advertising might take some pressure off of taxpayers ? or pressure off of schools having to ask people to pay for bonds ? as you can imagine, not everyone is on board with selling naming rights. In Lewiston, a member of the school committee (the school board equivalent) was very upset by his fellow members? decision. From the Lewiston-Auburn Sun Journal:

School Committee veteran and former chairman [James] Handy said he was opposed and that the school board lacks authority to do anything about inappropriate advertising.

Giving permission to a group not elected by citizens, Handy said, means they could end up with a Hollywood Slots swim team or an Oxford Casino track field. ?They may not have a problem with Trojan Condoms.?

Handy said he doesn?t want students ?to be raised in a school where every inch of flat surface ends up being advertising, including space on public buildings sold to the highest bidder,? he said. ?This corporatizes and professionalizes high school sports,? creating more pressure for teams to win to justify corporate investments.

To improve fields there should be a legitimate capital campaign ?that does not include the selling of our schools. Once we?ve opened that door, it?s free game.?

The other members of the committee said that, at the least, there will be no Trojan Condoms Field. Although I have to point out that, like in many things corporate, China has far looser standards than we have in the United States, given that it has whole schools sponsored by the state tobacco company, with such educational messages in elementary schools as ?Tobacco nutures talent.?

In the end, for both Clark-Pleasant and Lewiston, the fundraising might be for naught. While I have pointed out some examples of successful fundraising, in other cases, districts had ambitious sponsorship plans that went wanting.

For example, in 2009, backers of a new turf football field at Jonathan Dayton High School in Springfield, N.J., started a fundraising effort that included perks such as $250,000 for naming rights and $5,000 to sponsor a flagpole. Construction is scheduled to begin in September on that field, which is scheduled to open in fall 2013. However, the money isn?t coming from the sponsorship effort. Instead, it?s being paid for the old-fashioned way ? with proceeds from a $3.4 million, taxpayer-funded bond issue.

We have to give 100 percent against Cameroon: Robin Singh

New Delhi, Aug 30

India's attacking mid-fielder Robin Singh feels that the two-time champions have the ability to beat Cameroon, the highest ranked team in the Nehru Cup, in Friday's league game.

"It is always 11 vs 11 on the football pitch. We have the belief that we can. I don't believe in rankings so it does not bother me that they are 59th and we are 168th. It matters what you do on the day. If we play to our potential and give our hundred percent we certainly have a chance," he said.

The East Bengal striker, who made his international debut in the Nehru Cup, said he is relishing his role in the national team.

The burly striker is being used as an attacking mid-fielder by India coach Wim Koevarmans but Robin has not qualms about it.

"This is my first step towards playing for the country. It is always special to play for India. Playing for your country and club is very different. When I donned the India jersey for the first time, the feeling was very special and unique. I am relishing every bit it and want to give my all for the country," he said.

Asked about his role in the team, Robin said: "I have always been the target man in every team. I have the responsibility to support the other striker receive the aerial balls as well. It is not difficult for me to adjust as I play in the same system under Trevor (Morgan, East Bengal coach). Football is a team sport and not an individual sport. So every player needs to be ready to respond to the call - be it in the Starting XI or as a substitute or from the team bench. You need all the 11 players to stand up and deliver."

Robin said the Nehru Cup has been a huge learning curve for him.

"It?s a new learning curve for me and all the seniors are brilliant at their game. I am learning something new every day," he said.

Robin also shrugged aside his critics, who have always questioned his attitude.

"Performance speaks and I believe I am putting in that extra bit every day to do well. My performance has earned me the international call. I have been consistently doing well for the last two years. My job is to play and I don?t care about my detractors," he said.

Sony's tiny ruggedized Action Cam gets official with 16MP Exmor R, WiFi, $199+ price tag (hands-on)

Sony's tiny ruggedized Action Cam gets more official with 16MP Exmor R, WiFi, $199 price tag handson video

Remember that itsy bitsy GoPro competitor we spotted at Sony's CE Week booth earlier this summer? Well, it's gearing up for an official release late next month. Dubbed Action Cam -- a fitting name given that it'll live mounted anywhere from sky diving helmets to downhill skis -- it'll ship in late September or early October for $199. In a surprising twist, the incredibly small HD shooter will also be getting WiFi -- that version will be available for $270. Both cameras are identical save for wireless functionality, but considering that WiFi enables remote configuration and viewfinder capability for framing your shots (there's no video-capable LCD on the device itself), you're gonna want to shell out the extra 70 bucks. Regardless of which flavor you choose, you'll net a very capable camcorder with a 16-megapixel Exmor R sensor (great for low-light shooting) and fixed-zoom Carl Zeiss lens, complete with SteadyShot image stabilization, a 1080/30p capture mode and a 720p option at 120 frames-per-second, enabling some pretty slick slow-motion effects.

The Action Cam is a modular system, so you can count on a bevy of accessories -- there will even be a "Handycam Adaptor," which comes complete with a 2-7inch display and a familiar camcorder interface. More standard options include an adhesive mount pack ($20, though two ship with the cam), a bar/bike mount ($30), angle mount ($30), a replacement housing that's waterproof to 60 meters and offers a standard tripod socket ($40 -- you'll get one in the box), two head straps ($25-30) and a suction cup ($30). It also uses removable storage (microSD), a swappable battery, and includes HDMI, USB and audio input jacks.

We weren't able to take the camera out on any wild adventure shoots, though plenty of professionals have, from the looks of the demo reel on display at Sony's event (and included at the end of our hands-on video after the break). We did get to play with the remote viewfinder feature, however, paired with the Android PlayMemories app (also available for iOS). This tool worked quite well over WiFi, with decent response and a usable framerate (for framing you shot, at least). The Action Cam itself feels quite solid, despite its size, especially when paired with the thick plastic housing (it's designed for use both underwater, and on land). What we're not quite clear on is battery life, which will surely factor into any purchase decision -- that detail will likely come to light as we near launch. You can take a closer look at the camera and accessories in our gallery below, and the hands-on video (complete with remote viewfinder demo) after the break.

With Less Than 2 Weeks To Go, 50% Of Kansas City Neighborhoods Haven?t Reached Their Google Fiber Goals Yet

Google Fiber rabbitJust over a month since it launched its "Google Fiber Rally" in Kansas City and with under two weeks to go, only about 50% of Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS neighborhood have reached their pre-registration goals to get access to the company's new gigabit Internet connection and TV service. On the Kansas side of the city, the majority of "fiberhoods" are still quite a few sign-ups away from reaching their goals and only 33 out of 74 neighborhoods have passed Google's threshold so far. Things are looking better in Missouri, where 67 out of 128 neighborhoods have reached Google's goal. There are also still a few neighborhoods on both sides of the city where nobody has signed up for Google Fiber yet.

Documents: Man turned self in for ND bank robbery

This image from a surveillance camera, released by the Williston (ND) Police Department shows Kent Clemens after he allegedly robbed Gate City Bank, in Williston, ND on July 18, 2012. Authorities say Clemens called 911 in Topeka, Kan., three days later telling officers that he had made a mistake and to arrest him. (AP Photo/ Williston Police Department)

(AP) ? Kent Anthony Clemens returned home to Kansas after a short stay in North Dakota's booming oil patch with a stack of crisp $50 bills, sharing what authorities say was ill-gotten booty with his sister.

Then, apparently, guilt set in.

Three days after Clemens allegedly held up a bank in the western North Dakota town of Williston, the 53-year-old called 911 and asked police in his hometown of Topeka, Kan., to arrest him "for making a mistake," according to an FBI affidavit filed in federal court.

"People have an attack of conscience all the time ? like returning stolen items to a store," Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller said in a telephone interview Tuesday. "But it is unusual to rob a bank and then call 911 in an attack of conscience."

When police arrived at Clemens' home last month, he was sitting on the front porch, "wearing what appeared to be the same blue polo shirt he was wearing when he committed the Gates City Bank robbery," the FBI affidavit said. He "put both of his hands out to police and told them to arrest him for making a mistake," court papers said.

Clemens is being held in North Dakota. He appeared in federal court in Bismarck on Aug. 17 and waived his right to a preliminary hearing, Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Volk said. Federal public defender Heather Mitchell said no other court hearings have been scheduled.

Neither attorney would comment on specifics of the case.

According to court papers, the suspect was wearing a polo shirt, a golf-style flat cap and tinted glasses when he walked into Gates City Bank in Williston on July 18.

He "looked more like he was going golfing than robbing a bank," said Williston Police Det. Cory Collings.

The suspect told the teller he had a gun and demanded $50 bills. The robber fled on foot with about $700, court papers said.

Clemens told authorities he did not have a gun at the time of the robbery and believed he made off with $800.

North Dakota has risen from the nation's ninth-leading oil producer to No. 2 in just six years, and Williston is the epicenter of the state's oil patch. Officials say the city's population has doubled in the past decade to some 30,000 residents.

Collings said the Williston Police Department is understaffed and overwhelmed by the increased crime from an exploding population.

"It would be great if all of our cases worked out like this. At least some of the sleepless nights would maybe go away," Collings said Tuesday.

Clemens' sister, identified as "Sheila" in court papers, told investigators her brother announced in early July that he was "quitting his job, and leaving to work the oil fields either in Alabama, North Dakota, or Canada," the FBI affidavit said. Clemens returned home on July 19, one day after the Williston bank robbery and gave his sister $350 in $50 bills, court papers said.

Clemens' sister told investigators she had spent most of the money but later gave authorities four $50 bills she had in her purse, court records show.

The VA Home Loan Guarantee Program was created to give affordable VA home loan finance rates to veterans and active military personal in order for them to keep their house or buy a new one. Interestingly, while the program is aimed at providing much-needed financial relief for soldiers and veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs has registered in 2011 a decline of 28% in the number of foreclosures despite an increase of 14% in the number of guaranteed loans. This means that the 1.5 million active borrowers believe that the program is not a government dole-out. Mortgage rates in Wyoming are at an all time low.

Are you eligible to avail of VA home loan mortgage rates? You may need to secure a Certificate of Eligibility from the Department of Veterans Affairs by completing the VA Form 26-1880 along with a proof of your service to the military. Basically, the rules are if you are on active duty for 181 days during peacetime or 90 days during wartime; served six years in the National Guard or Selected Reserves; and you are the wife or husband of a soldier killed in action, provided that the spouse has not remarried yet. Even the military personal who received a ?dishonorable discharge? may also avail of a VA loan mortgage rate but it requires a lot more paperwork.

What are the kinds of VA mortgage loans? There are several types of VA home loan packages. For example, there is refinancing which would drastically lower the monthly amortization of your home. If you want to purchase a new house, you can apply for a home loan which can goes since 30 years at fixed interest rates. The VA streamline loan, meanwhile, is geared toward cutting your interest although you can?t get cash with your property as collateral. There are other packages as well with various VA credit rates. Contact lenders for more information.

What if you want to transfer? Just because you took out a VA loan mortgage rate loan doesn?t mean you have to live there forever. If you decide to transfer, you offer your house for presume with the new owner taking on your obligations provided the government approves the deal. For an easier process, offer your house to another veteran or soldier just so your ability to apply for another VA loan mortgage rate will not be compromised.

The mortgage refinance process in Wyoming can seem time consuming and overwhelming but the internet today provides you with an effective way to find the best mortgage for your current situation. Now is the time to act since the mortgage rates in Wyoming are at an all time loan.

To cap or not to cap: Scientists find new RNA phenomenon that challenges dogma

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Some RNA molecules spend time in a restful state akin to hibernation rather than automatically carrying out their established job of delivering protein-building instructions in cells, new research suggests.

And instead of being a fluke or a mistake, the research suggests that this restful period appears to be a programmed step for RNA produced by certain types of genes, including some that control cell division and decide where proteins will work in a cell to sustain the cell's life.

This could mean that protein production in cells is not as clear-cut as biology textbooks suggest, scientists say.

"This could mean there are more variations to the proteins in our bodies than we realize; it means that RNAs can be stored and reactivated and we don't know what biological process that affects -- it could influence embryonic development, or neurological activity, or even cancer," said Daniel Schoenberg, professor of molecular and cellular biochemistry at Ohio State University and lead author of the study.

Schoenberg and colleagues discovered this phenomenon by tracing the origins of a cap-like structure on messenger RNA (mRNA) that is known to coordinate most of this RNA molecule's short life. Messenger RNA is manufactured in a cell's nucleus and each mRNA contains the instructions needed to produce a specific protein that a cell needs to live.

Until now, scientists have believed that once an mRNA is no longer needed to make protein, the cap comes off and the molecule is degraded, its job complete. But Schoenberg's lab discovered in 2009 that some mRNAs that were thought to be degraded were instead still present in the cell, but they were missing part of their sequence and had caps placed back on the newly formed ends. Because these mRNAs were in the cytoplasm, the changes had to happen there rather than inside the nucleus.

In this new study, the researchers were looking for further evidence of these apparent rogue mRNAs, but instead they found that a completely unexpected biological process occurs before some proteins are even a glimmer in a gene's eye: The uncapping and recapping of mRNAs outside the nucleus results from a cap recycling operation in the cell cytoplasm. This process appeared to enable certain RNAs to pause, without being degraded, before launching protein production.

"What this discovery tells us is a complete fundamental reworking of the relationship between a gene, messenger RNA and a protein. It's more complicated than we realize," Schoenberg said.

The research is published online in the open-access journal Cell Reports.

That fragments of mRNA could exist at all in the cell's main body was first reported by other scientists in 1992. Years later, Schoenberg asked a postdoctoral researcher in his lab to revisit these unexpected RNA fragments and confirm they exist. The postdoc's experiments showed that these mRNA, thought to be the dregs left over from their degradation, had caps on them -- suggesting they still had the potential to function in protein production. Schoenberg, also director of Ohio State's Center for RNA Biology, has been investigating this cytoplasmic capping operation ever since.

In 2009, he and colleagues reported the discovery of two enzymes in the cell's main body that would enable mRNA capping to occur completely outside the nucleus and in the cytoplasm instead.

In the current studies, Schoenberg sought to determine the physiological significance of this capping operation. The researchers engineered a way to block cytoplasmic capping in cells in the lab and then looked at changes in more than 55,000 RNAs.

This interference with cytoplasmic capping revealed that two different types of pathways could exist in the cells -- some mRNAs remained stable without their caps, while others without caps were rapidly destroyed. This finding indicated that mRNAs can lose their caps in the cytoplasm and at some point get recapped. With further experimentation, the researchers determined that only some mRNAs lost their caps in the cell body.

"It's not all of any particular message that's uncapped, just a portion of a message," Schoenberg said. "We wanted to show that we have uncapped RNAs in the cell and they are not degraded. It means they're stored that way."

This finding offered hints that there is a higher order to this phenomenon, and that some mRNAs purposefully rest in an uncapped state without being degraded by enzymes within the cell whose job is to remove them. It also suggested that as the capping circumstances change inside the cell body, signals from genes might undergo change that allows for two or more proteins, one being shorter than the other, to be made from the same mRNA.

"We have always thought that one gene would give an mRNA for one kind of protein. But what we have found makes us wonder if multiple proteins could be made from each of the messenger RNAs that undergo decapping and recapping in the cytoplasm," Schoenberg said.

The researchers used bioinformatics technology to determine which genes were manufacturing mRNAs that could exist in this uncapped and recapped state in the cytoplasm. These genes included those that control some of the most basic elements of cell survival: They determine the location of proteins and RNAs within the cell and, perhaps most significantly, the mitotic cell cycle -- part of the process of cell division.

"It wasn't random. It was very specific," Schoenberg said. "There are specific families of mRNAs that are regulated in this way, and that has ramifications for how proteins are expressed and regulated."

As an example, he cited how neurons communicate messages across vast distances to other nerve cells. It is known that mRNAs are deliberately kept in a silent state while they travel from, for example, the spinal cord to the fingertip, where they are then activated to make new proteins.

"What would the condition be of the mRNA to keep it silent? The possibility is it doesn't have a cap on it, and if it doesn't, it can't be translated. Maybe cytoplasmic capping in neurons is a function that allows that message to be translated at just the right time," Schoenberg said.

Or, in the case of cancer: "What if one of the things that happens is you are making shortened proteins instead of full-length proteins and the regulatory part of the protein is missing in the shortened protein? If that's true, can you interfere with this process and interfere with malignancy as a result?"

For now, these scientists can only speculate about what this unexpected biological process really means. Schoenberg's lab plans to investigate the phenomenon more thoroughly in a line of breast cancer cells.

As gamers flock to 'Guild Wars 2,' some get the boot

4 hrs.

The highly anticipated online fantasy game "Guild Wars 2" officially opened its doors today and already hundreds of thousands of players have flocked to the game.

Not surprisingly, gamers?and the game's developers at AreneaNet have hit a few bumps along the way?as hordes of players?have tried to sign in?to the massively multiplayer online role-playing game.?

Some players are?reporting problems connecting to the game while others are having issues creating characters in?the game, which takes place in the virtual, magic-filled?world of Tyria.?Meanwhile the developers at ArenaNet say they've already?had to suspend some "Guild Wars 2"?players for offensive and hateful behavior.

As they launched the game Tuesday,?ArenaNet officials announced that one million people?had already?played "Guild Wars 2" from Saturday through Monday?during a?three-day headstart program that launched over the weekend. Those who pre-ordered "Guild Wars 2"?were allowed to start on?Saturday. And ArenaNet reps say?that,?at one point,? 400,000 people were playing the game at one time.?

In fact, one French player?managed to get his character to the game's top level (level 80) in a record-breaking 32 hours of playtime.

But some players?on Tuesday reported having trouble logging into the game.?The official @GuildWars2 Twitter account acknowledged the issues?tweeting: "We're aware of the login issues and are working on them???thanks for your patience!"

ArenaNet also assured European?players that they are aware of connectivity issues there and tweeted, "We are currently pushing updates to fix bugs or issues that are affecting gameplay." And in the afternoon they?added, "For those of you having problems with lag or character creation, we're looking into it. Thanks for letting us know!"??

Meanwhile,?players have reported issues with the "Guild Wars 2" overflow server system, which is?designed to allow people?to keep playing when their own server is overloaded. And the "Guild Wars 2" Trading Post ?-- a system that allows players to trade items between?each other -- is offline.

ArenaNet issued the following explanation:

We currently have a couple serious bugs with one of our important back end systems. This error is causing the loss of trading post, players to sometimes be separated and unable to travel to each other when switching maps and entering overflow servers, and numerous guild errors. We are very sorry for this inconvenience and are currently working around the clock to try and remedy this error.

When this bug is fixed overflow servers will keep parties together and players will be able to travel to the same overflow server as any friend or guild member who is in an overflow.

Also offline: The official "Guild Wars 2" forums. When asked about it,?ArenaNet tweeted that, "at present our main focus is getting players in game."

With hundreds of thousands of players trying to jump into?a brand new online?game, these kinds of issues?are not out of the ordinary. When "Diablo 3" arrived?earlier this year, Blizzard ended up?apologizing to the many?gamers?who?encountered?servers so?overwhelmed by the launch-day crush the game was unplayable. And when BioWare launched "Star Wars: The Old Republic" servers quickly became over?crowded?and?many?players found themselves stuck in waiting rooms.

But the kinks and bugs associated with a new online game aren't the only issues facing the?"Guild Wars 2" creators and players.

Some players have found themselves suspended from the game for giving their characters offensive names and for using offensive and racist language while chatting in the game. It has become such a hotly discussed topic, the folks at ArenaNet took to Reddit to explain why they have?banned players?and to?offer examples of exactly the kind of names and language that can't be used.

They wrote:

To keep Guild Wars 2 a pleasant place to be, we take action against racist names, hate speech, and other unacceptable behavior. We have suspended some accounts involved in the use of offensive character names or inappropriate chat. The number of account blocks is miniscule: less than .001% of our total player base.

When an account is blocked for a chat offense, the account is given a three-day suspension. When an account is blocked for an offensive name, the player is required to rename the character name and, in most cases, the account is also given a three-day suspension.

In the lively Reddit discussion, ArenaNet went through some of the names and comments that earned a ban. Most are not appropriate for me to print here, but,?for example,?ArneaNet officials explained?it's not ok to say the following:

  • "Oh I am gonna break dance on your anal intercorse" (sic)
  • "shut the f(bleep) up with non-english, geez"
  • "the worm IS f(bleep)ing hard if you're a f(bleep)ing mentalpatient no we f(bleep)ing dont you can take a keep with 5 people if you're not a f(bleep)ing?(bleep)head"

Also, ArenaNet officials advise, "Save yourself a possible headache and avoid real-world and celebrity names." And no, you can not use the names?"Stop It Daddy Ahhhh" or "Adolf Critler."?In case you were wondering.

Though the game has now launched, the folks at ArenaNet say their work has only just begun.

As Mike O'Brien, president and co-founder of ArenaNet, said in a statement: "Now our focus is shifting to building on this living world we've delivered, continuously refining our game and improving services to ensure our players have the best possible experience."?

Reasons To Rent Construction Equipment

With the recent downfall of the world economy, it is not really surprising that a great number of businesses had to close their doors. For this reason, a lot of employees have lost their jobs thus the demand for particular products and services has decreased greatly. However, if there is one type of business that still remains strong despite the crisis, it is the construction industry.

The main reason how construction firms are able to stay afloat is the fact the need for affordable houses has very much increased as people needed to find ways to make the most out of the amount that they are currently making. However, the main dilemma now lies with real estate developers that need to come up with ways on how they would be able to build affordable housing units without compromising the quality of the workmanship and materials used for the house. One of the most effective ways to do this is by renting the construction equipment they need.

Business owners do this because for one, they don?t have to worry about the amount of money they would need to shell out just to be able to use machines for their building projects. The second reason is that this practice allow construction firm owners the opportunity to prepare well before they make a construction machine purchase. This means that business owners get the opportunity to improve the other aspects of their operations because they can fund it with the money that was supposed to go into buying construction machines.

Aside from the fact that rental equipment can give you more leg room in terms of the finances for your business, there are other benefits as well. One of these is the fact that business owners won?t have to be bothered by maintenance costs and repairs that heavy equipment ownership entails. The rental companies take care of this aspect before they release the construction equipment rental units to their clients Rental companies always make it point to check that the unit is fully functional before they deliver it to the project sites of their customers. Furthermore, repairs are shouldered by the rental company and in case the unit breaks down, a repairman or a replacement is sent right away. This minimizes the amount of time wasted due to downtimes. Heavy equipment rentals are affordable enough to allow small scale businesses the opportunity to take advantage of the convenience that these machines bring.

Furthermore, construction firms with not much capital have the chance to own different types of heavy equipment without needing to come up with large sums of money right away. HertzEquip is one of those rental companies that offer rent to own contracts for their clients. This type of arrangement is beneficial for small and medium scale construction firms because they no longer need to put up a down payment for the equipment and their payment for rent already covers costs for maintenance, repairs, as well as the premium for the payment of the machine. Business owners who choose to sign up for this type of agreement should look for a rental company that is willing to negotiate the terms of the contract so that both parties can benefit well from such a venture.

U.S. soldiers killed two to shield anarchist plot: prosecutor

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Four soldiers in Georgia who belonged to an anarchist militia that wanted to overthrow the U.S. government killed a former soldier and his girlfriend because he had learned of their plans, prosecutors said on Monday.

Prosecutors revealed the suspected motive as one of the soldiers pleaded guilty on Monday to voluntary manslaughter and other charges and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors over the December 5, 2011, shooting deaths of Michael Roark, 19, and his girlfriend, 17-year-old Tiffany York.

During his plea hearing on Monday, Private First Class Michael Burnett said Roark had learned of the militia while serving at Fort Stewart near Savannah, and the group came to see him "as a loose end," according to Long County assistant district attorney Isabel Pauley.

The four accused militia members, who were all stationed at Fort Stewart, operated under the name "FEAR," or Forever Enduring Always Ready, the prosecutor said. They plotted to assassinate President Barack Obama and to attack their Army base and a dam in Washington state, Pauley said.

They also discussed poisoning the apple crop in Washington state, the prosecutor said, and purchased $87,000 worth of weapons to carry out their attacks.

Burnett, who wore his Army uniform in court on Monday, agreed to cooperate with authorities in the prosecution of the three other members of the militia charged with the killing, Pauley said.

Prosecutors have not decided whether to seek the death penalty for the other three soldiers, who all face murder and gang charges. No trial dates have been set.

The bodies of Roark and York were discovered in a heavily wooded, rural area of Long County and both had been shot to death, Pauley said.

The army is assisting with the case, but the soldiers are being prosecuted in a civilian court in Long County, Pauley said.

Burnett faces 10 years in prison as part of his plea agreement but could still face the death penalty if he does not cooperate, the prosecutor said.

All eyes on Isaac as GOP convention approaches

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney's Republican National Convention sputters to life with the lonely banging of a gavel in a mostly empty hall, hardly the opening splash intended for the nation.

With a sprawling and strengthening storm bearing down on the region, the GOP hastily rewrote the convention script in Tampa, Fla., to present the extravaganza's prime rituals and headline speakers later in the week ? Tropical Storm Isaac willing.

Nothing is certain as the storm carves an unpredictable path toward the Gulf of Mexico, forcing planners to compress four days of events into three and otherwise improvise.

It's a complication, at best, for a party determined to cast the close election as a referendum on President Barack Obama's economic stewardship and Romney as the best hope for jobs and prosperity.

Domestic Violence by Proxy ? Parent-Child Relationship Death by ...

?

If you know domestic violence by proxy, then you know the threat of, or the experience of, parent-child relationship ?death by hearsay.? We see the world through the expectations we project. And these expectations are the sum of beliefs, precepts and biases that we acquire throughout life.

Children of domestic violence by proxy are fed loads of false information about the estranged parent. Even though they know on a deeper level that the foul representations are inaccurate, they grow to buy into the beliefs bestowed upon them. It?s how we as human beings resolve the cognitive dissidence.

Domestic Violence by Proxy and Cognitive Dissidence

The term cognitive dissidence is a psychological term referring to the state of internal stress evolving out of a discrepancy between one?s beliefs, feelings and actions. When there is a disparity between our beliefs, feelings and actions, and they are not in sync, we experience a state of inner stress. That is the cognitive dissidence.

The natural tendency of our system is to eliminate stress, and we do this by bringing the points of disparity into harmony. With respect to domestic violence by proxy, this generally means seeing the estranged parent through the eyes of the controlling parent?that is through the filter of the abusive parent?s point of view.

Maintaining the Hearsay

Children of domestic violence by proxy grow up to expect the estranged parent to match their internalized beliefs, and they interact with them from their well-rooted acquired belief system.

For example, let?s say that your children are brainwashed to believe that you abandoned them, failed to care for them ?and bottom line, don?t ?really? love them. As young adults they interact with you as though these internalized beliefs are factual.

Prejudice and Domestic Violence by Proxy

It is not that much different than individuals holding racial prejudice or other biases pertaining to religious affiliation or sexual preference. The way this plays out is as follows?

A specific interaction between the estranged parent and child is interpreted to be verification of the precepts, biases and beliefs that the child has held onto as his/her own. In other words, the child will use what he/she ?perceives? to substantiate the hearsay misrepresentations of the estranged parent. (This parent is not doing ABC, therefore they are continuing not to care for me.) Doing this keeps him/her from stirring cognitive dissidence.

The substantiated misrepresentations add to the collection of data that is the source of ?death by hearsay.? The unfortunate thing about this fact is that the child interacts with and through the offending parents precepts?making them more deeply embedded as his/her own.

Death by Hearsay

The concept death by hearsay refers to the death of the parent-child relationship as a result of chronic hearsay. So, the question you might ask yourself is how do you question the hearsay without exacerbating the child?s internal stress?

Each parent and child victim of domestic violence by proxy will need to find their own unique way to mend mixed memories and troubled waters. What I do know is that the clearer you are about the dynamics of this aftermath, the better you will be in dealing with and healing the underlying roots of parent-child relationship death by hearsay.

Explosion kills at least 19 at Venezuela's biggest refinery

PARAGUANA, Venezuela (Reuters) - A gas leak caused an explosion that killed at least 19 people at Venezuela's biggest oil refinery on Saturday and wounded more than 50 in the OPEC nation's worst industrial accident in recent memory.

The deadly blast follows a string of minor accidents and unplanned stoppages that have afflicted state oil company PDVSA over the last decade, prompting critics to accuse President Hugo Chavez's government of mismanagement.

It was not immediately clear how the blast would affect operations at the 645,000-barrels-per-day (bpd) Amuay facility, which makes up two-thirds of the world's second-largest refinery complex, nor for how long output might be affected.

State TV showed footage of smoke billowing from the refinery as dawn broke, and emergency workers were on the scene.

Stella Lugo, the governor of local Falcon state, said the explosion had also hit homes in the area and that a 10-year-old child was among the dead.

"We are deploying our whole fire service team, all our health team, the whole contingency plan on the orders of Comandante Chavez to first of all care for the people affected by this emergency," Lugo told state TV.

Located on a peninsula overlooking the Caribbean sea in the west of Venezuela, Amuay is part of the Paraguana Refining Center, the second-biggest refinery complex in the world with an overall capacity of 955,000 bpd.

"A cloud of gas exploded," Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez told state TV. "It was a significant explosion. There is appreciable damage to infrastructure and to houses opposite the refinery."

Both Ramirez and Lugo said the situation was under control several hours after the explosion at about 1 a.m. local time.

"There's no risk of another explosion," Lugo said.

Ivan Freites, a union leader at the Paraguana complex, said foam had been used to control the blaze.

PDVSA has struggled with repeated refinery problems in recent years, crimping its capacity and its ability to fulfill ambitious expansion plans. Power faults, accidents and stoppages for maintenance have also curbed exports of oil products.

In 2010, there was a massive fire at a PDVSA fuel terminal on the Caribbean island of Bonaire, then a blaze at a dock at the Paraguana complex that halted shipping for four days.

Also in 2010, a natural gas exploration rig, the Aban Pearl, sank in the Caribbean. All 95 workers were rescued safely.

types of liquid diets ? A liquid diet is where the dieter consumes only liquid for their means of nutrition and energy. There are different types and variations in liquid diets. Nutritional shakes as many turn their choice a liquid diet. Nutritional supplement shakes are low-fat meals, but many use it as a sole source of nutrition. Providing over 100% of the daily recommended allowance of vitamins and minerals shakes, diet allow hearty and easy 12:59 fill, so they will not be tempted to eat extra food and therefore end up losing weight.
