Combining Wellness & Technology

Today?s health club clients are a diverse group of special populations, from those seeking rehab, to individuals requiring exercise prescriptions to accommodate special needs, to athletes who have specific competition goals. What this means is that the fitness center staff has more information than ever to convey, and an even more difficult task of identifying what information to communicate to which members.

But if the entries in this year?s nova7awards competition are any indication of how clubs are handling this challenge, computer technology appears to be the key. While the winners and runners up of the competition?s Web Sites & New Technology category were featured in our Dec. 1998 and Jan. 1999 issues, many of the ?non-winning? entries also deserve recognition. They just may spark your imaginative juices and help you to put some technology to use in your facility.

Healthy uses of computer technology

At The Williams Companies Wellness Center, Tulsa, Okla, staff wanted a complete exercise/lifestyle tracking and incentive system that would allow them to communicate with on-site members and employee members based in field locations. What they came up with was HealthTrack, a system which comprises an administration module for staff and a kiosk-based member input module that serves as one complete system for health status data, exercise tracking/incentives, member/staff messaging and monthly reporting. The staff can regularly update greetings to keep member interest piqued, and incentive points are awarded for healthy lifestyles as a reminder that there is more to health than exercise.

At American Home Products Health & Fitness Center, Madison, N.J., staff set out to provide quality information to members on topics ranging from living with asthma to beginning an exercise program. They did this by expanding their Web site (http://health-front.com/fitness) with the inclusion of articles written by the seven-member fitness staff. As a result of the articles, members have benefitted from staff interests, talents and experiences; questions have been answered, reinforcing staff credibility; and awareness of wellness topics has risen in the users who visit the site, which receives approximately 2,500 hits a month.

And, at Bayfront/St. Anthony?s Wellness Centers, St. Petersburg, Fla., staff wanted to provide members, as well as individuals worldwide, participating in the center?s 15th Annual St. Anthony?s Triathlon with an easily accessible training program.

To do this, they set up a triathlon training Web page, complete with training schedules and tips. The site not only helped the public more closely associate the Wellness Centers with quality fitness services, but it reinforced the hospital?s image as an expert source for exercise and fitness information.

Emily makes her choice on 'Bachelorette' finale

Roman Francisco / ABC

By Natalie Zurawin, E! Online

Roses are red, violets are blue, there are two men left (and one rose), so whom will Emily Maynard choose??But seriously, who?! You may think you know, but really you have no idea....?

READ: "The Bachelorette" recap: and the last two men standing are....

Have you been strong enough to resist believing the rumored winner via recently leaked reportage? While we all love a little gossip, we refuse to believe it till we see it when it comes to "The Bachelorette."

By now Emily has brushed past the proverbial thorns and is ready to present the final rose. Except not really, because she is in love with two men at the same time!

Not only does she have to pick the right man for herself, but also for her daughter Ricki.

READ: "Bachelor" casting alert: Sean Lowe enters the mix!

Her parents and Ricki meet her in Curacao to help her make the right decision. Jef comes to meet them first.

Jef says to Emily's father, "I wouldn't feel right taking the next steps toward Emily and I being together if I didn't have your seal of approval, too.... I definitely want to have your blessing before asking Emily to marry me at the end of this." Her pops happily gives him the seal of approval.

Her brother is skeptical of Arie at first, but they connected over caring for children. However, he gave her family a box full of the roses that he received each week from Emily as a symbol of their relationship. Arie also asks Emily's dad for her hand in marriage. Pops says "yes" to Arie, too!

MORE: "Bachelorette" scoop: Is Emily Maynard "dissing" Chris Harrison? And who's a diva?

Thanks for the help, dad. Not. Then her mom steps in and advises her to not accept any engagements right away until she is absolutely sure of her feelings.

Initially, Emily was not planning on introducing her daughter to the suitors, but after Jef and she had a heart-to-heart on the beach she suddenly changed her mind.

He was so ready to meet Ricki that he jumped in feet first. Literally. The three of them played in the pool, and then set a hermit crab free into the sandy beaches.

MORE: "The Bachelorette" recap: Emily picks her final three

Although things went swimmingly with Jef over the past few days, it seems Emily feels more lost than ever. She meets with Chris Harrison to get some advice. However, she reveals that she feels more strongly for one of the men, so Chris tells her, "Be as honest with him as you are being with me."

On her date with Arie, he anoints her with a love potion he made for her, and then she breaks into tears. Maybe he forgot to add the love.

In a shocking twist, Emily breaks up with Arie right then and there. You could actually hear his heart break pounding when she hugs him goodbye because her microphone hits his chest.

RELATED: "The Bachelorette" recap: Which four guys are bringing Emily home?

Meanwhile we see Jef picking out an engagement ring with the one and only Neil Lane. Do you think she will end up accepting his proposal?

With a perfect ring picked out and an even more perfect romantic moment complete with an '80s song montage. She said yes!

But wait, there's more! More secrets are being revealed on a live episode of After the Final Rose.

Chris sits down with Emily, and without hesitation they bring Arie out to reunite with Emily for the first time. For not getting any closure, he talks very positively about the experience. She apologizes again for not fully communicating her true feelings at the time.

Arie confesses that he could not go out in public and be himself after the show ended. He was so heartbroken that he flew out to North Carolina to talk with Emily. He simply left his journal on her doorstep that he wrote during the show.

PHOTOS: "The Bachelor's" OMG moments

Although she did not read it out of respect, she expresses that she admires his open heart and genuine love for giving her such a romantic gift. He wishes she would have been more honest with her, but his friendship with Jef helped him move on and still be happy for the couple.

RELATED: "The Bachelorette" recap: Who does Emily Maynard tell to "get the (bleep) out"?

When Jef comes out, all he can do is gush about how much he loves Emily and Ricki. All together now, "Awww."

So what's next for the ridiculously attractive couple? First stop: A humanitarian trip to Africa to build water wells. As for where they will build their lives together as they prepare for their wedding? (Yes, the wedding is actually happening.) They will settle down in North Carolina so that Ricki can stay at her current school.

And they say fairy tales don't come true.

Mazel tov y'all!

Do you think Emily made the right choice? Engage your comments over on Facebook!?

Hang Ten! Surfboards For Beginners And All Surfers

By: Sachin Kumar Airan

Surfing is where a person ride the crest of a wave with the help of one of the styles of surfboards offered today. These boards come in various colors, shapes and lengths. No matter what level surfer you are, read on to learn more information.
Longboards are the ideal surfboards for beginners. These are long enough to make the beginner feel secure in the water. However, the more experienced surfers also like these boards. They provide a wide platform for those who like to work the length of a board. The longboards are also ideal for making sweeping turns.
The funboards are useful in all sorts of surfing conditions and waves. With stability in mind when they were designed, these boards are sturdy and wide, and easily paddled through the water. The shortness of them makes them quite maneuverable and fast to respond when going through the water. These make it easy for you to transition from the longboard to the shortboard when you are ready. Surfers of all skill levels use these.
Shortboards are not the surfboards for beginners. These are designed for maneuverability and turning. It allows the surfer to perform high levels movements including aerials. It is recommended that you have some experience with surfing before trying these.
Stand up paddle surfboards provide a new challenge for experienced surfers. These provide plenty of exercise, because there is no lying down on the job with these. You have to paddle the board through the water standing up and then ride them back to shore when you catch a wave. These have a wide platform and classic lines. They also have some cool graphics.
For intermediate surfers, the fish surfboards are ideal. This helps them change for the longer boards to the shorter boards without trouble. These boards easily do cutbacks and turns. They are also easy to paddle and float on because of their thickness.
Have you been into surfing long enough that you know that you want a special surfboard? You can custom order one to your specifications. One can be built to the length, width, thickness and more that you desire. If you have a different idea for the fin setup or the shape of the tail, this can also be special ordered.
When it comes to surfboards, just make sure the style you get matches your skill level. If you are just starting out use the longboards, but if you have enough experience you can use any of the boards made for surfing. Hang ten, but do it with safety in mind. The last thing you want to do is make you first surfing experience your last one.

And the best sandwich in the Northwest is ... | Business | Eugene ...

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Owners of a local sandwich cart are celebrating some national recognition.

Big Ass Sandwich was recently featured on the Travel Channel show Adam Richman's Best Sandwiches in America.

The sandwich, with roast beef, french fries and cheese sauce -- all put on local ciabatta bread -- earned top honors in the Northwest.

On Wednesday, there was a 10- to 15-minute wait just to get a taste of the sandwich that could serve as more than one meal. The sandwich is already catching on in downtown Portland as is the food cart, said Lisa Wood, who owns the cart with her husband Brian.

"When I got laid off out of radio, we had always talked about opening a restaurant and this is a great starting point," she said.

Wood has worked in the cart for the past three years. Now thanks to Richman's show, her lines at this Cracker Jack box-sized cart stretch down the street.

"We're trying to keep up," Wood said. "It's an 8x16 cart. We only have so much space ... We homemake everything we also packed this thing to the gills every morning when it's gone it's gone we have to make everything again."

The taste isn't just in the bread. The beef can't be forgotten. The same goes for the cheese sauce that practically melts in your mouth. The french fries are also a crucial ingredient in the sandwich.

"We hand-cut the fries we cook them twice and it's a taste you won't find anywhere else," Wood said.

It's a taste her customers said is just too good to stay away from. James Guigayoma was visiting in town from San Francisco visiting friends and made more than one stop at sandwich cart.

" ... We've been here pretty much every day," he said.

Customers like Guigayoma are keeping Wood and her staff busy.

"You have to have all that stuff together, and it's the flavor we're going for," she said.

The business has been so successful that the Woods would like to eventually open a restaurant to serve what is now the best sandwich in the Northwest.

These written literatures maybe postcards, pamphlets, leaflets, and so forth, showcasing a company's goods or services. A few include approaching functions demanding consumer participation. The method has been in use by both profit-based and non-profit agencies. ?

Grocery stores and merchants have long used this process as they contact long-time customers and potential people of approaching sales.

Shops can particularly be innovative on how they market their goods. Those who work in the music industry, for instance, may send out trial CDs to prospective customers. Others may well deliver fragrant brochures to build up a cologne.

As this technique is potentially low cost and successful, other market sectors also joined in. Credit card companies released their own campaigns to lure in customers. They send applications so customers may easily apply for one.

Direct mail entails targeted or untargeted promotions. A targeted plan uses addresses of clients who have consented to getting mail via the U. S. postal service . This class could have been consumers in surveys or other methods and willingly gave their basic information to obtain sent mails and messages. ?

Untargeted promotions entail utilizing all published addresses inside a particular spot.

Customers who receive letters might or might not have agreed to this method. The marketing campaign management sees this as a great step since it can entail a larger audience. They believe even people who most likely are not interested might abruptly feel interested to buy.

Cost and Enactment

Costs rely on the way you take action and the number of customers you'll be targeting. A do-it-yourself can be done, but might take up a lot of your time and effort and prove more costly in the end. The quantity of posts to deliver also plays a part because more individuals means more expenses. You have to use more materials, buy more postage stamps, and pay more on posting charges.

Although a do-it-yourself task can be done, employing direct mail marketing companies could be more useful specifically if you are sending out countless mails frequently.? These companies have the groups and expertise to complete the job. They could also do this more quickly and more skillfully providing you with a lesser number of worries on the process.

In addition, they also have access to hundreds of mail listings and knowledge on the USA postal service procedures. The customer listing maintains the campaigns, and familiarity with the strategies makes things more efficient. Your letters reach their intended destinations on time, ensuring you of efficient information dissemination.

How to Seek the services of Direct Mail Marketing Companies

You might find businesses offering direct mail marketing by doing a search online. Examine and compare services and rates. While online marketing is a growing trend nowadays, you cannot discount the strength of direct mail. You are sure your materials get to the target recipients; they don't get flagged or labeled as spam. Plus some individuals now find benefit in getting physical mail, because it suggests more effort and attention on the company's part.

Intent: Stop Letting Other People's Negativity Affect Your Mood

"I intend to not let my mood be affected by negative people around me" | Support Stephanie's Intent

It has happened to all of us - while driving, at the supermarket or on the subway. I remember forgetting to yield to a pedestrian once. Even though it was my mistake, it did not warrant the extremely negative and rude reaction of that person. I was completely crushed and depressed by the way she treated me. Why do we give other people so much power over us? I did not know that woman nor would I ever see her in my life again; but in that moment, her opinion of me erased all the positive feelings that I had. Our internal state very often mirrors people's attitude to us and that needs to stop. The only person that should have power over how you feel is yourself.

We cannot change other people, they will do what they want and act how they want. The only thing we can change is our reaction to them. Ignore their negativity, reply to them with a smile and show them that they have no power over you. Walk away from it when you can. If it is someone close to you, be honest and tell them that their attitude is unacceptable and you want none of it in your life. And most important of all - never reciprocate negativity. Rise above it and kill them with kindness.

The Key Pieces Of Affiliate Revenue | Successful Affiliate Marketing ...

Affiliate marketing can be a superb money-making tool. It can be as simple as selling other people?s item on your website and receiving pay for it. You can get paid by click, per referral or per sale. The computer handles most of the work. This article can help you get involved and make some more money.

If you are not good at making and managing websites, opt for a blog. You can buy a domain name and associate it with your blog so that you still have a unique name. A blog is much easier to manage and you can easily create an attractive interface. You can also do some networking with other blog users.

To avoid being punished by search engines for search engine optimization techniques that are not advised, make sure that you host NO duplicate content on your website. Place your affiliate marketing links on a single page and attempt to drive all traffic there. This will save you a lot of time on building back links, and ensure that your click-throughs are easy to track.

Try your affiliate out. Call the customer service number of an affiliate you are considering working with, pretending to be a customer with an issue. This will give you a first hand view of how the business actually handles customer complaints and solves their issues, allowing you to comfortably decide whether or not to work with them.

Keep creating products. Creating products can make more money for you directly, but giving your affiliates more to work with means that they can make more money for you as well as themselves. Plan a schedule for releasing new products so that your affiliates know to expect something new.

Even online keep in mind the golden rule of business, ?the customer is always right?. Do not fight with customers on your website and do not try to convince them that their opinion is in some way wrong. Work to correct whatever issues they feel they are having and your reputation will soar.

With iTunes? popularity and a huge percentage of Internet users listening to audio files for data, recording a Podcast as an affiliate marketer is a solid way to increase your sales numbers. Hearing you speak will build more trust than simply reading your words, so do not take this tip lightly.

Affiliate marketing is not just for customers who know how to build websites. If you can write well, know how to promote products in a fun, interesting way and like to make extra money, then affiliate marketing can help you when you really need it. All you need to do is get permission from the company that you have been interested in to sell their product.

A great way to get people to click on your advertisements is to include descriptions of the products on your page. Bullet lists are a great way to sum up the advantages a product offers in a clear and legible way that will allow your readers to notice it easily.

Successful affiliate marketing is all about creating relationships. Be sure to join blogs and forums having to do with the product that you wish to promote. Make comments frequently and if you are allowed, include links to your website. You can make valuable contacts and build powerful alliances by identifying and befriending others who share your enthusiasm for your product.

As expressed in the beginning of this article, affiliate marketing is a great way to improve your business visibility and to increase your traffic. It can also help build partnerships between former competitors. By learning more about affiliate marketing and finding a technique that works for you, you can greatly increase your business.

Former Harvard coach accused of stealing at NY bar

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- A former assistant football coach at Harvard has been accused of stealing about $80,000 from a suburban New York restaurant not far from Greenwich.

The Westchester County district attorney's office says Evan Loring, of Wallingford, Conn., has been arraigned on charges of grand larceny and falsifying records.

Prosecutors say the 28-year-old Loring found work last year bartending at Bar Taco in Port Chester after losing his job at Harvard. He was eventually promoted to assistant manager.

They say that between October 2011 and April 2012, Loring manipulated the restaurant's computer system to alter customer receipts, then pocketed the difference.

His lawyer, Robert Schuster, declined to comment.

If convicted of grand larceny, Loring could be sentenced to five to 15 years in prison.

When (and why) should you sign a personal guarantees to secure ...

Over the next year, 61 percent of small business owners expect to expand their businesses. For many that will mean they will be in search of capital. What may surprise them is they may be required to sign a personal guarantee to secure financing. Below are seven things you need to know about personal guarantees.

  • What is a personal guarantee? A personal guarantee is an unsecured written promise from a business owner and or business executive guaranteeing payment on an equipment lease or loan in the event the business does not pay. Since it is unsecured, a personal guarantee is not tied to a specific asset. However, in the event of non-payment a lender can go after the guarantor?s personal assets.
  • Why do lessors and lenders require a personal guarantee? Many lenders require a personal guarantee as an ?added assurance? that the owner or executive is committed to the business and is committed to repaying the equipment lease or loan. A personal guarantee demonstrates to a lessor or lender that you are a responsible business owner and intend to repay all of your business leases and or loans. The general rule is that any holder of 20% or more of the equity of a business must personally guarantee the lease and loan obligations of the business. In most cases a small- or medium-sized business owners? personal finances are intertwined with the business, so it is reasonable that a lessor or lender would want this assurance. From the lessor or lender?s viewpoint, if the owner isn?t willing to stand behind the business, then why should the lessor or lender take a risk?
  • Why is the spouse required to sign in some cases? For the same reason a business owner is. Since in most cases a small- or medium-sized business owners? personal finances are co-mingled with the business, so is the spouse?s finances.
  • Are all small- or medium-sized businesses required to sign a personal guarantee? Not all SMBs are required to sign. The exceptions include large, well established SMBs with revenues exceeding $25 million; public companies registered on a public stock exchange like NASDAQ; non-profit companies; venture-backed companies; and businesses structured as ESOPs. A good rule of thumb, though, is that if your primary bank requires a personal guarantee for a 12 month revolving loan, then a lessor or lender providing a 3 to 5 year term lease or loan (involving more risk because of the longer term) will certainly require it.
  • When should you NOT sign a personal guarantee? Be careful about signing a personal guarantee if you are not part of the executive management team and do not really have a full view of the company?s plans or finances. If you are unsure, consider having your lawyer review the document.
  • What does a personal guarantee include? The personal guarantee will declare that you are personally liable for the lease or loan obligations of your business and may also declare that you are liable for default interest, legal and other fees.
  • What if you sell the business? In the event you sell your interest in a business, you need to make sure you get your personal guarantee released. If you are not properly released from the personal guarantee you will still be held liable if the lease or loan goes into default.? You may be required to pay off the lease as part of the sale of the business.

Calif. woman ordered to trial for fatal boiling water, baseball bat attack on ex-husband

A judge has ordered trial for a Northern California woman charged with pouring boiling water on her sleeping ex-husband in a jealous rage over another woman.

Prosecutors say 39-year-old Jesusa Tatad pulled back the sheets covering 36-year-old Ronnie Tatad and tossed a pot of boiling water on him. Authorities say she then clubbed him with a baseball bat as he screamed in pain.

Although divorced, the couple shared a small Daly City apartment.

Ronnie Tatad died two weeks later.

Prosecutors say the defendant believed her ex-husband was seeing another woman. A defense attorney disputes the prosecution's characterization of the case.

A San Mateo County judge ruled at the end of Thursday's preliminary hearing that there was enough evidence to order trial.

Jesusa Tatad is charged with murder and torture in the November attack.

She has pleaded not guilty and is in jail without bail pending arraignment July 31.

Cancer survivor helps other patients survive ? - CNN.com Blogs

In the Human Factor, we profile survivors who have overcome the odds. Confronting a life obstacle ? injury, illness or other hardship ? they tapped their inner strength and found resilience they didn't know they possessed. Richard Dickens?wanted to help?cancer patients, but he never imagined he'd have to battle disease himself before being able to do so.?

Three words unite all cancer patients: ?You have cancer.? These words shock the mind and for many begin a period of denial.

Denial is not a bad word.? As someone once said in a young adult group I attended, ?sometimes there is a healthy dose of denial.?

I experienced a healthy dose of denial when I was diagnosed with stage?4 follicular lymphoma at 37.? Before my diagnosis, I had just received my acceptance to attend graduate school to study social work. I was an avid athlete and a competitive marathon runner.?I felt I was at the peak of good health.

Then one morning, when I lifted my arm and saw a swollen lymph node, I knew it was serious.? Walking numbly through weeks of tests and appointments with several doctors at different hospitals, I learned my prognosis.? The good news was that my cancer responded to chemotherapy, but the bad news was that it was terminal.? I asked a nurse and doctor how long I had to live; they told me I had maybe 10 years.

Ten years are a lifetime when you?re 8, a short time when you?re 80, and not enough time when you?re 37.? Still I never?asked ?Why me??? By 37, I knew people my age and younger who had died of cancer, AIDS, accidents and a wild lifestyle.

As a person of strong faith, I realized none of us are guaranteed a full or super-sized life.? Instead of ?Why me?? I wondered ?Why not me??

If I only had 10 years to live, what did I want to accomplish?? I adopted the beliefs of a ?realistic optimist.? I would do anything to beat my cancer, but I didn?t want to deny that cancer brings some uncertainty.? About this time I read a quote in a magazine that said: "I asked God, how much time before I die?? She replied, ?Enough to make a difference.??

That quote put my situation into perspective.? We can make a difference in a minute, a day or a lifetime.? It?s not about time, it?s about quality.? So I chose a very aggressive treatment,?went into remission, and left my corporate job to attend graduate school and study social work.

During this time, the clock was ticking, and I felt I needed to get comfortable with death.? I knew some people who had worked with the Missionaries of Charity in India, and so I traveled to India?and volunteered at Mother Teresa?s first clinic, Kalighat Home for the Destitute Dying.

My cancer came back when I returned from India. I graduated from Columbia University bald and in treatment and then underwent a bone marrow transplant, thanks to my sister Kathy.? It wasn?t easy.? But with the support of my family and friends,?I did recover.

More than 10 years later, even though my initial diagnosis was terminal, I am now considered cured.? I am an oncology social worker at CancerCare, a national organization that offers free, counseling and support groups, educational publications and workshops, and financial assistance to anyone affected by cancer.

CancerCare helped me when I was first diagnosed, and now I?m giving back by helping people find their way after a diagnosis.? The difference I try to make is to help patients and their families develop a rhythm and get into a space where they can examine their emotions and feelings - guiding them through the maze that is cancer.

Dessert Cocktail Madness | Pharm Care

Recently, dining has started to become exhilarating and stylish. Gastropubs are replacing restaurants, and chow wagons now distribute gourmet grub. Several culinary chefs have actually gone so far as to become demented mad scientists utilizing molecular gastronomy. It really is no real shock that grown-up cocktails have gone elaborate as well. Bartenders now are mixologists.

The trademark prime quality cocktail has long been developing for some time. Lots of martini versions exist. Alcohol based drinks of each and every coloration radiate across all of San Francisco. A couple of drinks even feature their very own mist because of some dry ice. It certainly is fantastic, and a bit intimidating.

Everybody has a critical eye on wine nowadays. Chain grocers at this point have much more of a variety than liquor merchants did years ago. They even come up with reasonable wine from a box as of late. It really is surprising.

It could be intimidating to go to a chic pub. Trying to keep an eye on specifically what is chic very nearly necessitates a research team. Many alcoholic beverages evaporate and disappear completely in weeks. Some other drinks are new classics.

Regardless of all of this alcoholic anarchy, there exists a silver lining. The latest frontier in this cocktail cacophony certainly is the dessert drink. That?s right. Zealous bartenders throughout the world are assembling sweet drinks used just for dessert.

These kinds of cocktails surpass traditional sweet dessert or ice wine. Vintners have taken it up a notch from these sorts of long-established offerings. Chocolate wine is slowly gaining an entrance into the market. Traditionally, chocolate was always a very good pairing with certain wines. These days because of the introduction of chocolate wine, both of those can be bought in the very same bottle.

The advantage right here is the fact that dessert cocktails have not been done to death yet. And thus, having a variety of relatively easy sweet drinks to finish off the dinner or simply just change the tempo, can definitely add in a wonderful component to any party or meal. Consider it as being a little bit of liquid finesse.

They are not hard to make, nonetheless they appear to be exotic and complex. These cocktails are called names like the chocolate cake shot, the wedding cake shot, and the chocolate martini shot. Certainly, they come in non-shot types, but few men and women have heard about the shot assortment.

A quick sweet shot also provides a few other advantages. One, a shot of sweetness isn?t an excessive amount. It can accent a dessert without taking from it. Also, just a shot can create a fabulous statement without shifting the cocktail hour into a candy store.

So, become a member of the craze. Dessert drinks are the new adult candy store. Include shots of sophistication to any celebration and impress the crowd.

About a year ago I adopted a version of the Mediterranean diet for two reasons. First, I wanted to drop 10 lbs that I just could not seem to lose. Second, the diet was cheap!

I usually ate fruit/berries with yogurt for breakfast. Lunch and dinner would be based on pasta or couscous with lots of veggies, beans, and olive oil. I would also have meat/fish/poultry 2-3 times a week.

So, after a year I?m 10 lbs heavier, feeling uncomfortable in my body, and ready to try something different.

Just the other day, I heard an interview on NPR with Gary Taubes concerning his book, Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It . (easy to find on Amazon)

His ideas sounded interesting, so I DL?ed the book (it?s a quick read)?. Basically, his thesis is that over eating and resultant obesity are caused by chronically elevated levels of insulin in the body which is, in turn, caused by a high-carb/low-fat diet.

Taube makes a pretty convincing case, and I know from my recent, personal experience, it seems to be true?

He advocates an Atkins style low-carb/high fat and protein diet. He argues that this diet is not nearly as unhealthy as has been characterized and references the recent Stanford A TO Z Diet Study to back his claims?

Here?s a YouTube vid presenting the study results. It is LONG, but it?s interesting and entertaining.

Anyway, I?m giving up my couscous, pasta, and (gasp) beer for a while, to give this low-carb/high fat and protein thing a try?

So, I?m wondering, does anybody here have experience on this sort of diet? Or any informed thoughts/opinions on the science and health effects?

I can't usually do such a diet consistently because my mom pays for my food, and they're into buying more processed food, so any food for me that's not processed is hard to get her to buy, but it's getting better.

Anyway, I love diets like that. They're awesome. Easy to lean out on them, basically once you lean out, you can introduce some carbs back in. There's no need to be like, a carb nazi or anything like that, and be like "Uh-oh, these meatballs have bread crumbs in them!" or something, but I can say I feel pretty awesome on such diets and can lose weight pretty easily. You do gotta have a fairly high vegetable intake, though.

Hmm.... Interesting.

I have never tried to eat this sort of diet before.

However, in my late teens to my late 20s I was a hardcore weight lifter and I did try to eat a high protein/low fat diet....

Thing is, I was getting most of my protein (not counting supplements) from animals so I was getting lots of fat too. To avoid fat I mostly avoided sweets (because that stuff usually has lots of fat too), and things like cheese and eggs....

Looking at the low-carb diet the only things different from my "low fat" diet is that I can eat cheese and eggs and I should not eat beans, rice, and pasta (which I ate in moderate amounts on my low-fat diet). In hindsight, it was probably avoiding all that sugar and eating less wheat flour that really helped me stay lean.

I find animal fat, as far as energy it gives me, it gives me a much "cleaner" energy curve than carbs, if that makes sense. You could go full out ketosis, and never eat carbs at all, but yeah. It's better to have the animal fat, though, imo. When you see a lot of cultures and go with the argument "well they can't live entirely on meat, that'd cost too much" you gotta keep in mind, a lot of the traditional cultures rely a lot on animal fat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salo_(food) Like there's an example. You pretty much just have to think "How did people 70 years ago eat?" And look honestly there. For example, fried chicken wouldn't be anymore prevalent now or back then, but one difference is that fried chicken is always fried in vegetable oil. No veg oil except olive oil, maybe flax seed oil, etc, is actually natural. You can't get soybean and corn oil without chemicals to process it. The human metabolism hasn't really adjusted to veg oils, but it's well adjusted to animal fat. So I think going low carb is good for weight loss, but once you get to a weight you want, you can introduce SOME carbs back, but just don't go having carb based meals.

And you can lose weight on any diet with portion control. http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08/twinkie.diet.professor/index.html That doesn't mean a diet is good. Also, one thing neglected is, in many Mediterranean cultures, there's lots of meat. Look at the Greeks and soulvaki.

@ 1000Knives

I agree, that looking at how people used to eat as opposed to how they eat now is very important. In his book, Taubes looks at ethnographies of various Native American cultures over many years?

For instance, in the 1840s the Pima Indians lived on wild game and high fiber veggies and they were reported to be lean, healthy, and active. By the early 1900s, after decades on reservations eating government rations of flour, sugar and coffee, the same tribe was described as sluggish, obese, malnourished and unhealthy (many were diabetic).

Another good nutritional ethnography is the ?Inuit Paradox.? It contrasts the traditional Inuit diet of fat and meat with their modern western diets and corresponding changes in disease patterns.

@cathylynn

I?m glad the med diet worked for you. If you have time you should really watch that Stanford video. Their study found that while insulin sensitive types may do well on high-carb/low-fat diets, people who are insulin resistant will do much better with high-fat/low-carbs.

Also, in the study, the people on the Atkins diet had the best (most heart healthy) blood chemistry?

PS

The Stanford Study was conducted by a ?25-year vegetarian? who said, writing a paper that sited the Atkins Diet as being healthy and effective ?was a bitter pill to swallow.?

PPS

@ glasstoria

The guy in the Stanford vid also warns that extremely high protien could be bad for the kidneys...

The interesting thing about the study is that most people could not significantly change their protien intake alone. With all the diets, the real give and take was between fat and carbs.

Wow...

Quote:
Dr. Davis recounts an experiment he conducted on himself to compare the different impacts of ancient wheat and modern wheat on his blood sugar. He managed to find some einkorn wheat and made bread from it. Two slices of that bread raised his blood sugar from 86 mg/dl to 110. Not bad. Then he made bread from modern whole wheat ? you know, the stuff the USDA says is the key to great health. Two slices raised his blood sugar from 84 mg/dl to 167. That?s diabetes territory. As Dr. Davis writes in another chapter after explaining the specific types of carbohydrates found in wheat:

Wheat products elevate blood sugar levels more than virtually any other carbohydrate, from beans to candy bars.

As the graph I displayed in a previous post showed, the typical American consumes somewhere around 1,000 calories per day in the form of sugars and grains. Our dominant grain by far is wheat ? wheat that was never part of the human diet until 50 years ago.

Wow indeed.

...and I've been eating couscous (literally wheat grain coated in wheat flour) two bowls a day/5 days a week for a year... Confused

To be honest losing weight is more then diet, It's about the will to torture yourself and keep going and learning to embrace pain in the beginning where most will fail and can't handle it and keep going and build up and reach a new level each week/month depending on your pace.

For me the beginning killed me and you have to be willing to sweat and be extremly motivated and then begin to enjoy it that's from my personal experiance and never stop and do what you can to get the edge to get results and learn from the best to emulate the best salut

Uh...well...have fun with that.

I just had to start working out a bit and not eating things that aren't good for my body. Different strokes for different folks I guess. BTW, I lost 40lbs in 3-4 months last year that way, with a bit of calorie restriction. Now that I'm lifting, I can't do as much calorie restriction and still maintain my sanity, so I have to find out what food my body likes and what it doesn't, and the results have been interesting.

As well it should be, since consumption of animal products is considered by the nutritional community to be directly related to increased risks of the same dietary-related diseases which are the top killers of Americans.

Now, the low carb philosophy as espoused originally by Atkins, when separated from the protein-equals-animal-products myth, is supported by pretty much every study ever done on the relationship between insulin and weight. The fact that to this day there are would-be dieters who eat processed carbs and starches constantly ("whole wheat, though!" Rolling Eyes) despite decades of data is testament to how obsessed with wheat and sugar the Western food culture really is.

"Atkins" (if we want to call it that) is extremely healthy, when the protein and fat sources are things like nuts, seeds, and legumes, as opposed to dairy, flesh, and eggs. The fact that all these things are high in protein is, in the same sense that a donut cannot be compared to an apple on no more a basis than their being starchy, quite irrelevant, nutritionally, in their effects on the human body.

VEGAN diet FTW!!!

I think so, but within the thread's context of weight loss, I think it's just important to remember that the low carb/high protein diet needn't be coupled with the health risks normally associated with it (due to Western false equivocation of protein with animal products).

You needn't eat totally vegan to follow an Atkins-themed diet redesigned toward more plant sources.

Animals are good eatin'. I can have respect for a vegan diet to a point, it's the standard of monasticism in my religion, so that says something there. But for me, everytime I've tried them, it pretty much didn't work.

Also, I found out meat helps me personally, as I'm more Type II muscle fiber dominated. Type I muscle fiber is fed by glucose and is more meant for endurance, but Type II is meant for short bursts of energy, sports like shotput, weightlifting, high jumps, etc. Type II on the other hand is fueled by creatine. Where do you get creatine? Meat.

Quote:
In humans and animals, approximately half of stored creatine originates from food (mainly from meat). A study, involving 18 vegetarians and 24 non-vegetarians, on the effect of creatine in vegetarians showed that total creatine was significantly lower than in non-vegetarians. Since vegetables do not represent the primary source of creatine, vegetarians can be expected to show lower levels of directly derived muscle creatine.

So for me, I need to eat those animals to like...not hate my life. And lift heavy things up and put them down on a regular basis.
