Akin 'hangs in there' despite funders' desertion (+video)

Though many Republicans have urged him to quit, Congressman Todd Akin continues his pursuit of a U.S. Senate seat. His revised campaign plan includes reaching out to small donors for a few dollars at a time.?

Abandoned by deep-pocketed national groups, Missouri Rep. Todd?Akin?is passing a collection plate among his remaining supporters, asking for a few dollars at a time in hopes of sustaining a Senate campaign jeopardized by his remarks about women's bodies and "legitimate rape."

Akin?claimed Thursday to have taken in more than $100,000 during a two-day online fundraising drive that he portrayed as a grassroots effort to circumvent "party bosses" who demanded that he drop out. But the six-term congressman will need much more than that to replenish a campaign account already diminished by a hotly contested primary.

"It's very difficult, when you have the limited base we have in Missouri, to send emails out asking for $3 at a time," said Pat Thomas, secretary of the Missouri Republican State Committee who has worked as a coordinator for numerous candidates. "I don't know how to build a war chest to do that."

Akin?now has to go forward without the firepower of well-funded political groups that had planned to pummel Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill with negative television ads.

If his money runs dry,?Akin?could confront a difficult choice: re-evaluate whether to remain in the race or adopt a bare-bones strategy relying on social media and socially conservative activists to counter the millions of dollars of mass media advertising expected from McCaskill and her allies.

First,?Akin?has to repair his reputation with fellow conservatives and, according to Thomas, "get back to the point where people think you're credible."

Federal records show?Akin?has purchased enough air time to run apology ads in Missouri's biggest TV markets through at least Monday.?Akin's?campaign said Thursday that it has spent more than $200,000 on the statewide apology commercials while ad trackers for his Democratic opposition described it as a $277,000 effort.

He's also working to mend fences. On Thursday,?Akin?attended a meeting of the conservative Council for National Policy in Tampa, Fla., site of the Republican National Convention, which he has agreed not to attend. He tweeted that his Wednesday fundraising goal had been met.

"Thousands of people stepped up and helped us raise over $100,000! The message is clear ... voters should pick candidates, not party bosses,"?Akin?said.

He then sent out a new fundraising email asking supporters to chip in $5 toward a goal of raising an additional $25,000. Earlier in the week, he pleaded for $3 donations.

Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee also issued a fundraising plea for?Akin?on Thursday, accusing the "Republican establishment" of a "carefully orchestrated and systematic attack." If the national GOP and the "money-rich" political action committees "won't help Todd?Akin?get us to the majority, then we'll do it without them," Huckabee wrote.

Akin?campaign spokesman Ryan Hite declined to say exactly how much has been raised by the online contributions, but he said they were just part of?Akin's?fundraising strategy, which still includes efforts to get larger donations from more traditional sources.

Akin's?campaign has not revealed how much money it has left. Before Missouri's primary, financial papers showed he had a little over $530,000 as of July 18. But he has spent steadily on ads since then. The next quarterly report is not due until Oct. 15, barely three weeks before the general election.

After winning the primary,?Akin?gained quick backing from national Republican and conservative groups focused on ousting McCaskill. But that support evaporated after?Akin?was asked in an interview that aired Sunday on St. Louis television station KTVI whether his general opposition to abortion extended to women who have been raped.

A Look Inside Tool King's Google Shopping Transition Toolbox

?We quickly realized that the transition away from free traffic would actually be a fantastic opportunity for us because it would shake off many of the low-quality sites and affiliates.?
?Ben Skigen, ecommerce director, Toolking.com

What was your initial reaction when Google announced that Google Shopping was to start in October?
Because a significant portion of our revenue-generating traffic comes from Google, we were initially a bit dismayed. But we quickly realized that the transition away from free traffic would actually be a fantastic opportunity for us because it would shake off many of the low-quality sites and affiliates that had been clogging Google Shopping for some time. As Google continues to raise the bar, only the stronger businesses will survive.

We always hear from marketers that when Google changes its algorithm, it hurts its business. How much has this three-month rollout of the changes helped you plan your strategic roadmap?
It?s given us time to prepare and refine our systems and algorithms that manage these campaigns, although Google has already surprised us and other retailers with far wider changes much earlier than we initially thought, based on their announcements. So even though Google provided a more specific schedule than we are accustomed to seeing from them, it still allowed plenty of ?gray area? for them to make changes.

How are you deciding which products need to be included on Google Shopping?
Right now our intention is to include all of them on Google Shopping, though I am sure that some SKUs will just not perform and will eventually be bid down to the point that they don?t appear highly or at all.

Have you been using Google Product Listing Ads, and how has that experience helped your transition to Google Shopping?
We had experimented with PLAs when they first came out, but since Google was very inconsistent about when and how they were displayed, we did not make PLAs a priority until it was clear that they would stick?as opposed to becoming an abandoned Google project?and would be here to stay.

In conjunction with the Google Shopping launch, are you thinking of doing anything different with Amazon, eBay or any other marketplaces you?re in?
We?ve already been selling the majority of our catalog on Amazon, eBay, Sears, Walmart, Buy.com and NewEgg, and we definitely intend to continue doing so. When those channels start running PLAs for products we are selling on their sites?and some already are?it?ll end up becoming a bidding war over literally the exact same product. We?re okay with this because we get the sale regardless of if the customer goes to Amazon or comes to ToolKing.com directly.

What kinds of lessons are you and your team learning along the way that?s helping you overall with your data feeds?
Having a relationship with (marketplace platform provider) ChannelAdvisor throughout this process has been incredibly valuable to us. They?ve been doing a fantastic job keeping us alerted to the changes as well as giving us guidance and support during the transition. When we signed up with ChannelAdvisor, we never even considered the value of having guidance like this, but now it?s starting to be one of the things we appreciate the most about our relationship with them.

Treasurys jump after Fed minutes suggest action

Treasury prices rose Wednesday following news that the Federal Reserve weighed more help for the economy.

The price of the 10-year Treasury climbed 93.7 cents for every $100 invested late Wednesday. The yield sank to 1.70 percent from 1.81 percent late Tuesday.

Minutes from the Federal Reserve's last meeting showed that many members believed more support was needed to help the economic recovery, unless it began building significant strength.

Treasury prices rose after the minutes were released. Traders largely interpreted them as a sign that the Fed will start buying more bonds soon.

The 30-year Treasury bond rose $1.84 for every $100. Its yield fell to 2.81 percent from 2.91 percent late Tuesday.

The yield on the two-year note slipped to 0.27 percent from 0.29 percent.

The three-month T-bill paid 0.10 percent.

'The Office' to end after season nine

By Philiana Ng, The Hollywood Reporter

Chris Haston / NBC

The cast of "The Office."

NBC's?"The Office"?will end after the upcoming ninth season, it was announced on a conference call to reporters on Tuesday.

Executive producer?Greg Daniels?will return as showrunner for the final year -- taking over from?Paul Lieberstein,?who is prepping a potential spinoff.?Daniels ran the show, still NBC's highest-rated scripted series, for the first five seasons.

"As we head into the home stretch, we have a lot of exciting things I've been wanting to do since season two," Daniel told reporters. "The end should be pretty cool."

Daniels, who was on-set during the call, called it the "last chance" for the crew "to go out" the way he had envisioned, noting that "familiar faces [will be] coming back" as well as welcoming new cast members like?Jake Lacy?and?Clark Duke?for what may be an "emotional" ending for some.

Photos from THR: Broadcast TV's returning shows 2012-2013

"At some point you have a choice: to always tell the beginnings of stories and the middles or to allow a story to end and I think endings can be very powerful and meaningful pieces of the story," said Daniels, who shared that NBC entertainment president?Bob Greenblatt?was supportive of the season nine plan. "If we didn't let it end this year, I don't know if we would have been able to tell the endings for so many character that I really want to know the endings for."

The end of?"The Office"?means a big turning point for NBC as it looks to revamp its scripted lineup. The network is betting big on freshman comedies, picking up seven to series and giving condensed orders for returning half-hours like "Community"?and?"30 Rock." ("The Office"?and "Parks and Recreation"?were the only shows to receive 22-episode pickups.) "They may also be crying over lost advertising," Daniels joked. "Hopefully they'll have other things that are working by the end of the year."

The final season will be different from recent seasons, Daniels said, in that it will focus on arcs.

"The real heart of the show are these arcs that allow these characters to have ongoing stories. It's all going to be set up in the premiere," he said. "There's so much to pay off from nine seasons, so many great characters that my biggest concern is just tacking in these great ideas that the writing staff has on the walls and making sure we hit all of them or at least squeeze as many into the ending."

Daniels expressed hope that he would be able to keep big moments top-secret, for the most part. In the era of the Internet, that may well be impossible, something he brought up: "I would like to try to get back to the world where the world is surprised" by the story instead of reading about it three weeks before, he said.

Though most of the main cast of characters will remain on the show, though some (B.J. Novak?and?Mindy Kaling) in diminished capacities, "there are so many story lines to follow now, so many endings to write for different characters, risky things we wouldn't normally do if we knew we were going for a long time," Daniels said. "Now that we have an end date, we can blow up things and take some chances. It's very freeing and creatively ecxiting for the audience."

Photos from THR: Behind the scenes of 'The Office'

Some of those chances include upcoming story lines like Nellie (Catherine Tate) holding a charity drive at the office and Dwight (Rainn Wilson) donating to the Taliban in retaliation and that the identities of the documentary crew will be a big part of season nine. "All questions will be answered this year. We'll see who's behind the documentary and we'll meet some of them," said Daniels.

To bring it full circle, Daniels hopes that?Ken Kwapis,?who directed the pilot, will helm the final episode.

Does this mean that?Steve Carell?would return for a swan song as Michael Scott? "We'll see," Daniels said. "We have ideas for the ending and obviously if he would participate, we would have a lot of good times. The idea will fly without him if he can't make it. He is pretty busy."

The news comes after Universal Television, one of the studios behind "The Office,"?locked up former EP/current "Parks & Rec"?showrunner?Michael Schur?in a new overall deal.

"The Office" returns Sept. 20 at 9 p.m. on NBC.

AP-GfK poll shows White House race still tight

(AP) ? For all the attention it got, Republican Mitt Romney's selection of Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his running mate has not altered the race against President Barack Obama. The campaign remains neck and neck with less than three months to go, a new AP-GfK poll shows.

Overall, 47 percent of registered voters said they planned to back Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in November, while 46 percent favored Romney and Ryan. That's not much changed from a June AP-GfK survey, when the split was 47 percent for the president to 44 percent for Romney.

At the same time, there's a far wider gap when people were asked who they thought would win. Some 58 percent of adults said they expected Obama to be re-elected, while just 32 percent said they thought he'd be voted out of office.

After just over a week on the campaign trail, Ryan has a 38 percent favorable rating among adults, while 34 percent see him unfavorably. Among registered voters, his numbers are slightly better ? 40 percent favorable to 34 percent unfavorable. Ryan remains unknown to about a quarter of voters.

Romney put the 42-year-old conservative chairman of the House Budget Committee on the ticket Aug. 11. The AP-GfK Poll was conducted Aug. 16-20.

Romney and Ryan will be crowned as the GOP presidential and vice presidential nominees next week at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. The Democrats hold their convention the following week in Charlotte, N.C.

The closely locked contest reflects deep partisan divisions across the country.

Among true independents, those who say they do not lean toward either party, the share of undecided voters is declining, with each candidate picking up new support at about the same pace. However, Romney maintains a small advantage with the group, with the backing of 41 percent of independents to Obama's 30 percent. Some 21 percent still say they support neither candidate.

Among all voters, 23 percent are undecided or say they have not yet committed to their candidate.

One independent voter, Frank Nugent, a 76-year-old retired sales manager from Pittsburg, Calif., said he always gives both parties a chance to win him over ? but not this time.

"Considering what the opposition is like, I can do nothing else but vote for Obama," he said. Part of his dislike for the GOP ticket is due to Ryan, he said, describing Romney's ticket mate as "further right that the bulk of the Republican Party." But while he'll vote for Obama, Nugent said he's disappointed in Obama's record.

Robert Hamrick, 39, from Cedartown, Ga., is going the other way. Although a registered Democrat, he plans to vote for the Romney-Ryan ticket, claiming Obama has been deceptive and failed to make good on his promises on the economy, jobs and government debt.

As for Ryan, Hamrick said: "He's very smart. He knows his stuff. He knows the finance. He can take apart Obamacare with ease." Hamrick is a former nursing home manager who left his job about four years ago in hopes of finding one with more security ? and has been mostly unemployed ever since.

The frail economy, with the unemployment rate hovering at 8.3 percent more than three years after the deep recession officially ended, remains the No. 1 issue. Nine in 10 call it important for them and half of voters say it is "extremely important," outpacing all other issues tested by at least 10 percentage points. Two-thirds in the poll described the economy as poor.

Registered voters split about evenly between the two candidates on whom they'd trust more to handle the economy, with 48 percent favoring Romney and 44 percent Obama. They are also about evenly divided on who would do more to create jobs, 47 percent for Romney to 43 percent for Obama. Among independent voters, Romney has a big lead over the president on handling the economy ? 46 percent to 27 percent.

Romney often appeals to his business background as proof that he could better manage the federal government, and the poll finds that overall, voters are more apt to trust him to handle the federal budget deficit over Obama, by a 50 percent to 40 percent margin.

But it's unlikely that Ryan's background in authoring Republican budgets will boost them as an issue in the campaign. The share of adults saying the budget deficit was deeply important to them dropped from 75 percent in February to 69 percent in the new poll.

Among those who rate the economy as the top concern is Mattise Fraser, a 52-year-old Democrat whose hometown of Charlotte is gearing up for the Democratic gathering. "We're in a crisis situation now," said Fraser, who said she plans to vote for Obama. She says she's a homemaker ? but not by choice. "The economy is crazy. There's no jobs."

Obama holds a clear edge among voters on handling social issues such as abortion, 52 percent to 35 percent, and a narrow one on handling Medicare, 48 percent to 42 percent. Medicare has grabbed a lot of attention as an issue lately, with Ryan's proposals to partly change the program drawing criticism from Obama and other Democrats.

Of those who said Medicare is an extremely important issue, 49 percent say they plan to vote for Obama and 44 percent for Romney.

Obama's approval rating held steady at about an even split, with 49 percent saying they approve of the way he's handling his job and another 49 percent saying they disapprove.

The president remains more positively viewed than Romney, and continues to be seen as more empathetic. Some 53 percent of adults hold a "favorable" opinion of the president, compared with just 44 percent who view Romney favorably. Obama also held a commanding lead among voters as the candidate who better "understands the problems of people like you," 51 percent to 36 percent for Romney. Some 50 percent see him as a stronger leader than Romney; 41 percent see Romney as stronger.

Michelle Obama remains more popular than her husband. Sixty-four percent of adults view her favorably and just 26 percent unfavorably, although that's down from 70 percent favorable in May. Ann Romney's favorable rating is mostly unchanged since May, with 40 percent viewing her favorably, 27 percent unfavorably and nearly a third declining to say.

Thirty-five percent overall say things in the nation are heading in the "right direction," up from 31 percent in June.

Melinda Cody, a 45-year-old undecided voter in San Diego, sees positives and negatives with both candidates ? and says she'll vote for the candidate who does the least bullying. "When they just run a negative campaign, it backfires," she said.

The poll involved landline and cell phone interviews with 1,006 adults nationwide, including 885 registered voters. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9, while it's 4.1 points for registered voters.
